Healthy Bucks Club

Children will earn “Healthy Bucks” when they make healthy food choices during meal times and while attending Dedicated To Youth Foundation programs.

The Healthy Bucks can be used to shop for some exciting prizes that will be donated by our local businesses.

One of the programs they earn healthy bucks in is our “Mystery Food” program that will allow their peers to aid them in trying foods that they have expressed they do not enjoy while being blindfolded.

We use the blindfold technique due to most children not eating foods due to how they “look” and not “taste” as the saying goes…”it’s all in the mind”.

Each time a student cooperates and agrees to try something they never had or claims they don’t like, they will earn healthy bucks.

Did You Know That…

  • Maryland has the 25th highest rate of adult obesity at 24.4 percent and the 29th highest rate of overweight youths (ages 10-17) at 13.3 percent in the nation, according to a new report by Trust for America’s Health (TFAH).
  • Many obese children have high cholesterol and blood pressure levels, which are risk factors for heart disease.
  • One of the most severe problems for obese children is sleep apnea (interrupted breathing while sleeping). In some cases this can lead to problems with learning and memory.
  • Obese children have a high incidence of orthopedic problems, liver disease, and asthma.
  • Overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults
